Diva Cup Reusable Menstrual Cup Review

The Diva Cup is probably the most popular reusable menstrual cup on the market. As a matter of fact, it's so popular among reusable period products that a lot of women think that it's their only cup option until they get into researching and reading more about these types of items. I'm not sure if it's their fancy purple and pink packaging, their divalicious empowerment name, or advertising and promotionals the company has dished out for in the previous years. Any way it is, I wanted to give it a try and compare it to my Lunette.

When I first delved into the land of menstrual cups, I had purposely ignored the Diva Cup since it didn't seem to hold as much fluid as other brands. I have a heavy flow and I was afraid that the DivaCup just wouldn't withstand the tide. It appears that both of the "larger" sizes of the cups do hole 30 ml of fluid. So, with my Lunette as my trusty back-up plan if something were to go awry, I dished out some cash to be a Diva Cup user.

My first observation of the Divacup is my initial dislike. It does appear slightly smaller (in the inside capacity) than my Lunette. Perhaps it's just how I'm seeing it though. I also did notice that the suction holes on this particular cup seemed a little smaller than I expected from a cup. I figured this might actually help suction though.

Insertion was the same as other cup brands. I'm still a fan of the punch-down fold with this cup. The only thing that was different was that my Diva Cup refused to open at first. This was pretty troublesome.

So, I squatted down in my shower, figured I might help things adjust when inserting it. I couldn't get it to open as easily as other cups though. I'm not sure why. It seemed like it wouldn't open until I laid down on my back. Then, for whatever reason, the cup would literally POP open inside of me and hit me in the cervix. Ladies, it hurts to be popped in the cervix by a menstrual cup!

I thought that maybe there was a trick to it or that it was doing this because it was a newer cup. I tried to use it for my entire cycle. It wasn't bad. I had to change it more often, but the time it took to get the darn thing to punch me in my sensitive areas ended up allowing some leakage to occur. This didn't make me feel like a diva.

I, like many other women, also resorted to cutting off my entire cup stem on this cup. I haven't had to even trim the slightest bit from my Lunette though. I even think the Lunette stem might be longer. My guess is that the stem is thicker on the Diva Cup and just made me feel more irritable. The cup doesn't seem any longer than other brands I have used.

Now, from my experience, I wouldn't really recommend the Diva Cup. I'm not saying it's a worthless product though. Maybe I just got a defective dud, maybe I have an abnormal vagina for this model, or maybe I'm doing something wrong...but whatever it is, I know I wasn't as pleased with this cup. I suppose it could work for some women (and it apparently does work well for many, based on other reviews) but I just can't see how it compares to many other brands. It was uncomfortable, I had to modify it to make it work, it was harder to pop open, and it hurt when it finally did form the suction seal.
